When your wordpress starts giving out 500 internal errors intermittently or consistently, check your process table from your cpanel. Chances are, there are too many wp-cron.php hanging and clogged up your limited process table (as allowed by your hosts).

What's causing these wp-cron.php to hang? You may ask. First suspect, is your list of Update services, i.e. the list of ping servers under your setting->writing module.  No sure of the exact relationship, but when I get rid of the existing list of update services servers, my list of wp-cron.php also went away. Seem like a good place to start my troubleshoot from there.

Hope it helps you as it certainly helps me :)
